Developing HoundDog and the Mega Report


Introduction

Kroger faced challenges with its Mega Sales process, where incomplete UPC number tracking caused inefficiencies. Users relied on manual data collection from multiple systems, which was time-consuming and error-prone. I developed HoundDog, a desktop application, to streamline this process and showcase my ability to solve complex data issues.

The Challenge

During Mega Sales, not all UPC numbers for sale items were captured accurately. Users had to log into various systems, including product information, sales planning, pricing groups, sales data, warehouse inventory, and ordering. They copied and pasted data into spreadsheets to compile UPC lists, a process that was slow and prone to errors.

The Solution: HoundDog App

HoundDog, a custom desktop application built with Visual Basic, replaced the manual process. It provided users with a single platform to generate reports without accessing multiple systems. Key features included:

  • Centralized Data Access: HoundDog pulled UPC data from various systems, eliminating manual searches.
  • Automated Report Generation: Users could create accurate reports quickly.
  • User-Friendly Interface: The app simplified data retrieval and improved workflow efficiency.
  • System Integration: HoundDog connected seamlessly with existing platforms.

These features addressed inefficiencies and demonstrated my ability to streamline complex data processes.

Implementation Process

I built HoundDog using Visual Basic, leveraging my skills beyond basic macros and VBA. The app integrated with Kroger’s systems to centralize UPC data access. After thorough testing, HoundDog was deployed with minimal disruption. Users received training to adapt to the new tool, ensuring smooth adoption.

Results

HoundDog delivered significant improvements:
